About the course:

WATSON’S CARING IN A DIGITAL WORLD

Self-paced, Independent Study-Fully Online
Two sessions available annually in March & November

Learners will be introduced to Watson’s Caring Theory and how it can be implemented in digital communications with students, colleagues, and others. Exploration and learning related to key concepts will be supported through the introduction of mindfulness practices, reflective narrative, and contemplative art.

Digital communication is commonplace in everyday life, however few people pause to deeply consider the profound impact this continuous flow of interaction has on ourselves and everyone around us. The content in this course is based on many years of research and is meant to help you become more fully aware of how to care for yourself and others in situations where communication occurs in non-face-to-face situations.

The “Watson’s Caring in the Digital World” course is offered twice a year (in November and March). It is free and open to anyone who has access to the Internet. It goes over 4 weeks and requires roughly 8-16 contact hours to complete. Each week, for 4 weeks, there are a few brief readings and one reflective journal posting required. There is also a textbook available that is meant to accompany the course. The textbook is available as an e-book or print copy and can be obtained at all the major book sellers. The title is “Watson’s Caring in the Digital World” (2017) by Kathy Sitzman and Jean Watson—Springer Publishing Company.

There are no required “meeting” times for this course. Each participant is asked to complete the course at their own pace. It is fine to complete the course in a weekend or to complete one unit of study per week for the four weeks that the session is open. Participants may log in and review the materials each week when they can fit it into their schedule. The course instructor will read, grade your work, and provide feedback, as you turn it in.

It is easy to sign up—just follow the directions on the left hand side of this screen.

After you register for the course, write the start date on your calendar so you remember to join me when the session begins. I will open the course in the early morning hours the first day the class is set to begin. You can take the full month to complete the course, doing one learning module per week, or you can work ahead as your schedule allows. Either way is fine with me!
